We’re a little over four months into this whole ‘parenting’ thing and we’re starting to get the hang of it. Miles is such a happy and easy baby and has done really well with the transition to his crib, transitioning out of a swaddle and sleeping through the night. For the first few months we let Miles set the schedule—he would feed on demand, nap when he felt like it and would fall asleep on my chest each night. Since we moved him to his crib about a month ago we started to pay more attention to his feeding and napping signals, which allowed us to set a loose schedule. And so far he has responded really well to it. At that time we also started a bedtime routine that would help him relax and signal to him that it was time to settle down and get ready to sleep. We have a somewhat strict 7/ 7:30pm bedtime and start our bedtime routine somewhere between 6:15 and 6:30 each night. This routine has become one of my favorite family moments each day and it’s a time that we all look forward to in the evening. Our nightly routine looks a little something like this:
Bath Time: Miles loves the water so bath time with him is really fun. He likes his bath to be nice and warm and lounges in his baby tub like he is taking a spa, one arm resting on the side and one arm in the water…it’s too funny! We use the Seventh Generation Coconut Care Foaming Shampoo & Body Wash, which is so gentle on his skin while also doing a really good job of cleansing and nourishing his scalp. Miles has a little bit of very, very blonde hair so there’s not much to wash but he enjoys the little head massage! The Shampoo & Body Wash is tear free so I never have to worry about the soap stinging his eyes when we rinse the shampoo out of his hair. Miles takes a bath about three times a week so on nights when he doesn’t get a bath, he gets an extra long foot massage! Lucky guy.
Lotion & Foot Massage: This little guy loves a good foot massage (do you blame him?!) and if he is extra fussy a foot massage almost always calms him down…so he gets more than a few of these each day! We’ve been using Seventh Generation Coconut Care Moisture Lotion after bath time and for his foot rubs and one of the things that I really like about this lotion is that it has a very light scent which isn’t overpowering in any way. It’s made with organic coconut oil and does a great job of nourishing and soothing Miles’s delicate skin.
Feeding and Cuddles: At this point Miles is usually pretty relaxed, thanks to the foot massage, and ready to eat. I’ll feed Miles for about ten minutes or until he is full and pulls away (he’s a speed eater!) then I’ll cuddle with Miles for a few minutes before we read a bedtime story.
Reading: I like to read to Miles before each nap so most nights Marc will read to Miles before we put him to bed but I often try and sneak in an extra book with Miles and soak up his sweet snuggles! After that we tuck Miles into his sleep suit and give him one last kiss goodnight! And lucky for us he goes down very easy and usually falls asleep within a couple minutes.
After we put Miles to bed, Marc and I relax and chat about our day while peaking at the monitor to make sure Miles has settled into sleep. While our bedtime routine with evolve and change over the next few months and years I look forward to continuing these nighttime traditions together as a family.
